Populism in 21st century Britain: Why the EDL needs Facebook

English Defence League march in Newcastle9 November marks the International Day Against Fascism and Antisemitism and I recently wrote this piece on the far-right English Defence League and their reliance on Facebook for The New Federalist. The EDL are part of  worrying trend of new, loosely organised far-right groups that have appeared across Europe in recent years. There are now ‘defence leagues’ in several EU member states including Germany, France and Poland.

Leading independent think tank Demos have also recently published a fascinating study into the EDL – the first of its kind – and used Facebook to survey the opinions of its supporters on a number of different issues. The findings of the study can be found here.
